The protein encoded by this gene catalyzes the conversion of L-lactic acid and NAD into pyruvate and NADH in the final step of anaerobic glycolysis, belonging to the lactate dehydrogenase family. The lactate dehydrogenase family consists of three members, LDH-A, LDH-B, and LDH-C, all of which form tetramers composed of four subunits. The LDHA (lactate dehydrogenase A) and COPB1 (copolymer protein complex, subunit β 1) genes are involved in energy metabolism and protein transport processes. Both of these genes may play important roles in muscle development.
