Mitochondrial uncoupling proteins (UCP) are members of the family of mitochondrial anion carrier proteins (MACP). UCP1 forms a dimer that acts as a proton channel, which can uncouple oxidative phosphorylation by dissipating the electrochemical potential across the inner mitochondrial membrane.This gene is expressed only in brown adipose tissue, a specialized tissue which functions to produce heat.
