FTO (fat mass and obesity associated) is a dioxygenase that repairs alkylated DNA and RNA by oxidative demethylation. FTO contributes to the regulation of the global metabolic rate, energy expenditure, energy homeostasis, regulation of body size and body fat accumulation. FTO has recently been shown to have the highest activity towards demethylation of 6-methyladeninine in single-stranded RNA suggesting that FTO is involved in processing of nuclear RNAs and may play an important role in RNA epigenetics.
