The androgen receptor (AR) is a member of the steroid superfamily of ligand-dependent transcription factors. Upon binding the hormone ligand, the receptor dissociates from accessory proteins, translocates into the nucleus, dimerizes, and then stimulates transcription of androgen responsive genes. Steroid receptors are ligand-dependent intracellular proteins that stimulate transcription of specific genes by binding to specific DNA sequences following activation by the appropriate hormone. Androgen receptors (AR) have been found in a variety of tissues, including reproductive organs, central nervous system and skeletal muscle.
