This gene encodes a protein that is a member of the SUMO (small ubiquitin-like modifier) protein family. The encoded protein is covalently conjugated to other proteins via a post-translation modification known as sumoylation. This protein is involved in a variety of cellular processes, including nuclear transport, DNA replication and repair, mitosis, transcriptional regulation, signal transduction, apoptosis, and protein stability. There are 4 confirmed SUMO isoforms in human, SUMO-1, SUMO-2, SUMO-3 and SUMO-4.
