The LIN-12/Notch family of transmembrane receptors is believed to play a central role in development by regulating cell fate decisions. Ligands for Notch include Jagged1, Jagged2 and Delta. Mutation in Jagged1 is associated with Alagille syndrome, an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by abnormal development of liver, heart, skeleton, eye, and face and Tetralogy of Fallot (ToF), a common form of complex congenital heart disease. Jagged1 expression is associated with prostate cancer metastasis and recurrence.
