GLS, Also known as GAC,GLS1 and KIAA0838, belonging to the glutaminase family, it is a phosphate activated acylase that catalyzes the hydrolysis of glutamine into glutamate and ammonia. It is the first reaction in the main pathway of glutamine renal catabolism. GLS plays a crucial role in the metabolism, synthesis of brain neurotransmitter glutamate, and maintenance of acid-base balance in the kidneys.
