FABP3 (fatty acid binding protein 3), also known as cardiogenic FABP or mammary gland derived growth inhibitor (MDGI), belongs to a multi gene family that transports fatty acids and other lipophilic substances from the cytoplasm to the nucleus. FABP can be classified into at least three different types, namely liver type, intestinal type, and cardiac type. They are believed to be involved in the uptake, intracellular metabolism, and/or transport of long-chain fatty acids. They may also be responsible for regulating cell growth and proliferation. FABP is believed to play a role in the intracellular transport of long-chain fatty acids and their acyl CoA esters.
